Tigers land centre target, Dragons FINALLY sign half, Dolphins poach Wests young gun by StuffsEarth

Estimated read time 54 min read

The Wests Tigers have been heavily linked with a standout new centre and have finally landed someone for the position – just not the man many expected.

Fans have been waiting for the announcement of Justin Olam from the Melbourne Storm, with Shawn Blore going the other way in a swap deal, only for the club to announce the signing of Q Cup standout Solomona Faataape.

The Olam deal may well still go through, with Faataape added for depth. His record in Queensland is exceptional, with 16 tries in 24 games last year, where he was named Player’s Player of the Year at the Easts Tigers club, who picked up the Premiership.

Faataape was at Concord for the Tigers’ first session of the new year and got immediately to work.

“It’s an awesome setup we have here, and I’ve really enjoyed my first day at my new club,” said the 23-year-old.

“All the boys and coaching staff been so welcoming and have made me feel right at home.”

St George Illawarra have added to their meagre halves options by signing Ronald Volkman from the Warriors to compete with Kyle Flanagan for a starting berth.

The 21-year-old Kiwi joins after a week in which the Dragons were knocked back by two options, Tom Dearden and Jack Welsby, as well as losing incumbent 6 Junior Amone, who is almost certain to have his contract deregistered following an assault conviction.

Volkman came through at the Roosters but did not make a first grade appearance there before swapping to the Warriors, where he plazed five times last year without ever establishing himself.

He made his international debut for Samoa in the recent Pacific Championships and has been a reserve grade standout for several years.

The Dolphins have moved into the market for the first time this off-season, poaching up-and-coming Wests Tigers winger Junior Tupou for the 2025 season.

The Tonga international was one of the brighter lights in a poor 2023 for the Tigers, but has opted to leave the club at the end of his contract and move to Redcliffe.

The Tigers previously announced a surprise signing with the addition of Solomon Alaimalo from Super Rugby.

Theformer Canterbury and Waikato winger will join the NRL club in the new year after joining the Top 30 squad under new coach Benji Marshall.

Alaimalo was named Rookie of the Year in 2017 but has bounced across several clubs within Kiwi rugby union, and now will turn his hand to rugby league at the age of 27.

“We’re very excited to have Solomon join the club,” said Marshall, who trialled the player in training before making the move permanent.

“He is a very explosive athlete with great speed, power, and agility. He will also add leadership and experience to our group, and he is a man of great character.”

Manly have locked down one of their brightest stars with a huge eight-year deal for strike edge forward Haumole Olakau’atu.

The 25-year-old Tonga international has long been rated as one of the most destructive ball-runners in the game and will now be tied down to the Sea Eagles for the very long term.

He is 73 games into his NRL career and, with this deal, will stay at Brookvale until 2031, with a bump in his wage for 2024 and 2025 before this new contract kicks in.

“We have seen the growth in Haumole over the last couple of years but, in particular, the last 12 months,’’ said coach Anthony Seibold. “From a physical point of view, Haumole is an 80-minute back-rower now.

“The biggest thing that has impressed me over the past year is that Haumole has given himself to the team in a way that a lot of people are now following him. We have seen those leadership qualities in him.”

In other backrower news, Kurt Capewell has inked a permanent move to New Zealand, joining the Warriors immediately from the Broncos on a three-year deal.

The Queensland star had been linked with the Kiwis at the end of his contract, but Brisbane have not stood in his way and he will be able to link up with his new teammates for 2024.

“We’re thrilled to be able to lock in a player of Kurt’s quality and experience immediately,” said list boss Andrew McFadden. “With room in our squad we tabled a long-term offer in the hope of bringing Kurt to club from 2024. We’re grateful to the Broncos for their help in allowing him to leave early.

“Quite apart from what Kurt will provide as a player, he’ll be immensely valuable with his experience in a mentoring role for the young back rowers we have coming through the club.”

On top of the new signing, the Wahs have made further moves for the future with new deals for centre Rocco Berry and backrower Jackson Ford.

The pair had been off-contract at the end of this year, but now Berry is on deck until the end of 2026, while Ford gets an extension until the season after next.

The Wahs had already locked down one of their most influential players with Tohu Harris signing a one-year extension that will almost certainly see him end his career with the club.

The inspirational forward turns 32 in January and will now be at the club until at least the end of 2025.

He captained the Warriors through their Covid-enforced exile in Australia and then subsequently to a top four finish in 2023, with his ball-playing skills and leadership vital to Webster’s revolution in New Zealand.

The Sydney Roosters’ retention drive has continued with the announcement that Sitili Tupouniua will remain at the club for the next three years, with an extension inked until the end of 2027.

He has struggled for game time in recent years after an ACL injury ended his 2022 and a neck problem curtailed his 2023, but the club clearly has faith in the hard-running edge forward, who has made 85 appearances and scored 26 tries.

It comes in the same week that Easts handed out a three year deal to last year’s standout backrower, Nat Butcher, and follows the earlier extension of boom rookie Siua Wong, who signed a new deal earlier this month.

Canberra have extended star halfback Jamal Fogarty with a two-year deal that will see him remain in the capital until the end of 2026.

Newcastle have tied down a key member of their pack with Jacob Saifiti inking an extension to remain at the club until the end of 2027.
