Mexican drug cartels are pouring ‘unlimited money’ into Ecuador’s chaotic drug gangs as violence rages across the country.
These Ecuadorian gangs, running wild in the unruly country, have “unlimited money” to wage a bloody battle against government forces, thanks to backing from Mexican cartels.
The South American nation has been thrown into despair as a gang turf war has spiralled out of control. The situation is so severe that the government has labelled the gangs as terrorist organisations and even purchased 24 million gun cartridges, a number far exceeding its population of 17.8 million.

Dr Floyd revealed to the Daily Star that Ecuador’s two main gangs, Los Lobos and Los Choneros, are backed by the Jalisco New Generation and the Sinaloa Cartel respectively. “These groups are very dangerous. They are accountable to no one but themselves. They have no regard for the state, and in the war between the government and the gangs they have declared civilians legitimate targets,” she warned.
“Similar to terrorists, organised crime groups rule through fear. Local people often have little choice but being drawn into working with them. It is that, or die.” Dr Floyd added. She also mentioned that the Mexican cartels don’t care who dies, whether it be civilians or not, as they are not Mexican.
“The Mexican cartels that are said to have ties with them have unlimited money to fight Ecuador’s president and military. Moreover, it is not their people dying in this war, but local recruits for either camp.” she explained. Dr Floyd suggested that this could “essentially” create a proxy war between Mexican cartels and the Ecuadorian government to keep cocaine flowing freely.
