These are the 20 least populated countries in the world – and you may be surprised at some of the countries on there.

Nauru is the least populated country in the world, with a populations of just 10,873 people. Located in Oceania, the tiny island is northeast of Australia and is surrounded by beautiful white sand beaches and coral reefs.

Second on the list from WiseVoter is Palau, an island nation in the Pacific Ocean. With a population of just 18,174, it takes second place.

Third up is the British Virgin Islands, with a population of 30,423. Part of the Caribbean, it serves as a British overseas territory and is known for being a yachting destination.

Fourth on the list is San Marino, with a population of 34,010. This is the first country in Europe to appear on the list – located on the border of Italy.

Fifth is Liechtenstein, with a population of 38,254. This beautiful country is also located in Europe, positioned between Austria and Switzerland it is mostly German speaking. Known for its medieval castles and alpine landscapes, it’s a popular spot to visit for those looking for picturesque scenery.

Sixth is Turks and Caicos Islands, which is also a British overseas territory. Located in the Atlantic Ocean, it’s home to 39,226 people.

Seventh is Monaco, a popular European tourist destination with a population of 39,520 people. Known for its star-studded beaches and celebrity hotspot of Monte Carlo, it’s a firm favourite for holidaymakers.

Other European countries included on the list is Faroe Islands, which comes in at eighth and has a population of 49,053. Andorra takes 14th place with a population of 77,354 and the Isle of Man takes 15th place with a population of 85,410.
