Heather Hare went viral during the COVID-19 pandemic after an appearance on Good Morning America.
Hare appeared on the morning show for a heartwarming video of her students saying goodbye after her home economics class was discontinued as Bryant High School in Arkansas moved to distance learning during the pandemic.
Now, the story has taken a dark turn, and the 33-year-old faces life in prison after pleading guilty to having sex with a high school boy up to 30 times, according to KATV.
Hare’s guilty plea is to a federal charge of transporting a minor across state lines for the purpose of unlawful sexual activity. With the plea, Hare avoided facing additional charges of interstate/foreign travel for prostitution/sexual activity by coercion and one count of transportation of a minor with intent to engage in criminal sexual activity.
Hare allegedly began having sexual relations with the student during a field trip to Washington, DC. She met him during his senior year and began one-on-one counseling sessions before giving him her personal phone number and Instagram and Snapchat usernames.

The student and Hare then continued to meet for sexual activity.
“Hare later told the minor victim that she had a dream of them having sex and gave him her home address in Conway,” the Justice Department said in the news release. “The minor victim and Hare had sex approximately 20 to 30 times throughout the 2021-2022 school term, including multiple times at her Conway residence, in her vehicle, and in her classroom and parking lots at Bryant High School.”
Hare was first arrested last April after being accused of having sex with a 17-year-old student.
The federal charge of transportation of a minor to engage in unlawful sexual activity is punishable by a minimum of 10 years with a maximum of life imprisonment.
“This former teacher took advantage of her position of trust and the vulnerability of a minor, using her role to entice and lure this minor into engaging in unlawful sexual activity,” said Jonathan Ross, U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Arkansas. “Our office will continue to seek significant penalties against any educational professional who sexually abuses their students.”
A date for Hare’s sentencing has not been determined.
