Kilt-wearing Scotland fans have revealed the reasons they will be wearing the traditional attire every single day of their Euro 2024 adventure.

The go-to outfit for a huge number of Scots who follow the national team is the replica shirt-kilt combination, which has been seen on the streets of Germany in large numbers since supporters began arriving for the tournament.

Speaking to the Express, members of the Tartan Army explained their suitcases featured a row of football jerseys alongside their beloved traditional garment.

Asked about the downsides of wearing a single item of clothing normally without underwear day after day, the Scots said the set-up was preferable to shorts or jeans.

“Whether its cold or 35 degrees you just feel great. It’s much comfier and healthier than shorts or jeans, it just breathes,” said Alexander Connor, 47.

Jack Sharp, 20, was even more enthusiastic, and explained: “The material is just perfect, it just stays clean.

“If you wear shorts and jeans every day they get dirty, but a kilt is just not the same. You can’t really understand it until you wear one.

“I’ve got my phone and wallet in my sporran [the small leather pouch tied around the front]. It’s brilliant.

“The only downside is if you’re running because they whack you [in the groin].”

Beyond comfort or practicality, the 20-year-old from Dunfermline, West Scotland said the most compelling reason for wearing the traditional outfit was the feeling it generated.

“I just love dressing up and my kilt. I feel so proud and patriotic, it makes me feel so strongly Scottish I just love it, I really do.
He added: “People go, ‘oh, you’re wearing a skirt’. It’s not a skirt, it’s a kilt.”

However, not everyone in the Tartan Army crowd was as keen on the item of clothing as Jack. His uncle Darryl Falls, 48, these days prefers to wear the replica shirt without the traditional addition.

“I don’t wear kilts anymore, they’re too uncomfy for me,” he explained.

Asked about why the young lads like Jack didn’t feel that way, Darryl quipped that there was another benefit that might appeal to young lads.

“When you’re young you’re on the pull,” he laughed. “The kilt has come in handy a few times for me over the years, [mine] did some damage back in the day.”
