Thousands took to the streets in the heart of Coolock, Ireland, in vehement opposition to the government’s decision to house 500 asylum seekers in a former paint warehouse.
Voices rose in unison against what many perceive as an imposition on their community and an issue of national security.
“The people of Ireland have had enough of their government,” declared one protester, echoing the sentiments of many gathered in the demonstration.
The contentious proposal, which involves repurposing the abandoned Crown Paints warehouse on Malahide Road, has sparked outrage among locals.
“Ireland is saying NO to mass illegal immigration. The people want secure borders,” another protester told Dublin Live, highlighting the broader concerns regarding immigration policies.
The Department of Integration attempted to assuage fears, highlighting plans for “full engagement” with the public and community leaders. However, the assurances fell short for the demonstrators, who remained steadfast in their opposition.
Throughout the week, protestors maintained a visible presence outside the warehouse, culminating in a dramatic display on Wednesday night when horseback demonstrators brought traffic to a standstill.
Last night, their numbers swelled, with eyewitnesses estimating up to 2,000 people participating in the protest.
“The government cannot ignore our voices any longer,” said one protester, encapsulating the determination of the community to resist what they perceive as an unjust decision.
