Dogs forward re-signs, Dolphins secure Origin forward, Ricky locks in young fullback, Schuster’s new home by StuffsEarth

Canterbury Bulldogs forward Joshua Curran has penned a one-year extension, keeping him at Belmore until the end of 2026.

State of Origin front-rower Daniel Saifiti has signed a three-year contract to replace retired Jesse Bromwich at the Dolphins.

Saifiti departs Newcastle after 183 NRL games and will work with Knights former assistant Kristian Woolf, who will lead the Dolphins in 2025.

Dolphins’ chief executive Terry Reader said 28-year-old Saifiti was a perfect fit for the club as they aim for another year of improvement in their third season in the NRL.

“We are very eager to see what Daniel Saifiti is going to bring to our club,” said Reader. “He is a representative player, he is tough, aggressive and a hard worker – all the things the Dolphins pride themselves on being.

“It is probably impossible to replace someone who has had the amazing career of Jesse Bromwich, but we know we have done extremely well in bringing in Daniel to add to our depth.”

Saifiti has played seven Origin games for NSW and represented Fiji at Test level.

Kaeo Weekes has signed a new two-year deal at Canberra as a reward from coach Ricky Stuart for his breakout NRL season.

Weekes now holds a contract through 2027 and looms as the Raiders’ likely fullback for round one next season following Jordan Rapana‘s move to the Super League.

Weekes has played 17 games for Canberra since moving from Manly this season and received the coaches’ award at the club’s awards night last week.

A fullback coming through the grades, Weekes can also play in the halves in a pinch having helped the Raiders remain in the hunt for the 2024 finals by starting at halfback during Jamal Fogarty‘s biceps injury.

Canberra ultimately finished ninth with a 50 per cent win-loss record, missing the finals for and against.

Weekes recorded nine try assists and ran for an average of 121 metres this year.

“I want to thank the club for giving me the opportunity to come down to Canberra,” Weekes said.

“It was a big step to move down here away from my partner and family to chase my dream, but I’m so grateful I came.

“It’s been a really enjoyable first year for me, I love this club and what they’re building for the future and I’m looking forward to building on what I’ve started over the next few years.”

Regular first-graders Xavier Savage, Tom Starling, Simi Sasagi and Albert Hopoate are without deals beyond 2025 so can negotiate with rivals for 2026 from November.

Josh Schuster has found a new club, with South Sydney signing the troubled former rising star for the 2025 season.

Schuster managed just 50 NRL appearances before departing Manly midway through 2024. He debuted in 2020, however, due to an unfortunate combination of injury, poor form, positional switches and issues with his weight never locked down a role on the Northern Beaches.

Brisbane’ top-30 squad for 2025 is taking shape, with veteran duo Martin Taupau and Deloiuse Hoeter given new deals for next season.

After finishing a disappointing 12th this year the  Broncos are in the midst of a season review, and players have had their post-season interviews with coach Kevin Walters.

Taupau, 35, was out of the side for nine weeks this season before returning against the Warriors in round 17, when he was one of the best players on the field in a 32-16 loss while the Broncos were without their State of Origin players.

The former Manly forward played the last 10 games of the season to earn a new deal.

Warriors veteran Jazz Tevaga is joining Manly, Raiders hooker Zac Woolford is off to Huddersfield while Reagan Campbell-Gillard has been confirmed to be departing Parramatta but is yet to announce his new club with the Broncos, Cowboys and potentially the Tigers in the mix for his signature after a deal to join the Dragons fell through.

Titans forward Erin Clark is joining the Warriors while veteran prop Isaac Liu is also leading the club likely for a Super League swansong with the Leigh Leopards.

The Cowboys have re-signed Kiwi prop Griffin Neame after extending Maroons forward Reuben Cotter‘s deal as well.

Jack Bird has signed a two-year deal to join Wests Tigers but Corey Horsburgh won’t follow him after committing to remain at Canberra next season.

Former NSW representative Bird had initially exercised a contract option to stay with St George Illawarra next year before seeking permission to negotiate a longer deal elsewhere.

He began the 2024 season as a mainstay of the Dragons’ back-line but struggled for consistent opportunities after going down with an ankle injury in July. Bird finished the season filling in at five-eighth but could be used at centre, second row or lock for the rebuilding Tigers next season.

Horsburgh had been heavily linked with his own move to the Tigers after falling out of favour at the Raiders this season. Horsburgh’s management had initially approached the Green Machine to request a release from his deal, which expires at the end of 2027.

But the 26-year-old has told the Raiders he is keen to remain at the club in 2025.
