Most NFL teams now use more than one running back to help their offense. Years ago, teams relied on just one main player, like the Steelers did with Le’Veon Bell or the Titans with Derrick Henry.

But things have changed.

You need a good backup running back for different situations unless you have someone like Christian McCaffrey who can do everything for the San Francisco 49ers.

For the Kansas City Chiefs, Clyde Edwards-Helaire has been trying to support their new star, Isiah Pacheco. Pacheco became the main guy in 2022, while Edwards-Helaire had his worst season yet.

The Chiefs wanted to replace Edwards-Helaire with someone better. After recent roster cuts, they might have found their answer.

Chiefs sign Samaje Perine to active roster, improve RB room tremendously
Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reported that the Chiefs signed veteran running back Samaje Perine. He joins Pacheco, Edwards-Helaire, and fullback Carson Steele.

Perine was one of the best available running backs and will likely create healthy competition for the backup spot.

Known for catching passes and protecting the quarterback, Perine is perfect for third down plays. He’ll ease Pacheco’s workload and prevent over-reliance on Edwards-Helaire.

In the past two seasons , Perine averaged over four yards per carry , while Edwards – Helaire was closer to three yards . Perine also caught more passes , making him a valuable addition .
