The Union Cabinet Accepts National Biofuel Policy
The Union Cabinet approved the National Biofuel Policy-2018 on Wednesday with various revisions, the most significant of which was moving the aim of blending 20% ethanol with petrol to 2030 from 2025-26.
The policy was created to assist in achieving the aim of lowering import dependency on fossil fuels by 10% from 2014–2015 levels by 2022. This objective will be met by a five-pronged plan that includes boosting domestic production; implementing biofuels and renewable energy regulations; improving refining procedures; and substituting demand.
The National Biofuel Policy was created in 2009 and revised in 2018. The Cabinet has adopted the 2018 draft with further changes. It has allowed the production of additional biofuel feedstocks to promote the production of biofuels in the country via Special Economic Zones (SEZ)/Export Oriented Units under the Make in India initiative. It has also cleared the path for the export of biofuels in certain situations.
The amendments also ask for new members to be appointed to the National Biofuel Coordination Committee (NBCC), which is headed by the Union Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas and includes representatives from 14 other ministries.
